Chatunga Mugabe Arrested Over Armed Assault at Mazowe Mine
Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of the late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, has been arrested for allegedly leading a violent armed assault on mine workers in Mazowe.
According to ZimLive, Chatunga was taken to the holding cells at Concession Magistrates Court today ahead of his court appearance on charges linked to the brutal attack on alleged trespassers near the Mugabe family estate.

Armed Men Storm Mining Site
The incident occurred around 4PM on Wednesday at the Ultimate Mining site, which borders Grace Mugabe’s estate.
Witnesses said Chatunga arrived in a convoy with several armed men, some carrying AK-47 assault rifles. The group accused mine employees of allowing illegal gold panners to trespass onto the Mugabe family’s property.
The confrontation reportedly began after suspected illegal miners fled from Grace Mugabe’s land into the neighbouring mining concession.
Workers Blamed for Repeated Intrusions
A worker who requested anonymity out of fear for his safety described how they were singled out and blamed.
“They said we were letting people cross into the Mugabes’ land,” he recounted.
According to another official present, Chatunga personally confronted the workers and shouted in Shona:
“Wasiirei vanhu vachipinda mumunda wapresident chaivo?!”
(“Why did you allow people to enter the real president’s land?”)
Violence Leaves Multiple Workers Injured
Witnesses said Chatunga launched the first assault by attacking a security guard with his bare hands. Chaos erupted as his men began beating workers.
At least three employees sustained serious injuries, including skull fractures, broken ribs, and internal damage. Medical records from Parirenyatwa Hospital detailed severe bruising and lacerations caused by blunt and sharp trauma.
Firearm Discharged During Assault
During the scuffle, a firearm was reportedly discharged by accident, heightening panic among the workers.
A supervisor, who tried to calm the situation, was also attacked. He and three others—Chipara, Muchemwa, and security guard Elvis Bvumbwe—suffered multiple injuries. Bvumbwe remains hospitalised in critical condition.
The supervisor revealed he attempted to reason with Chatunga’s group, but was accused of “hiring thugs” to target the Mugabes.
