Brendan Taylor Joins Elite 10,000-Run Club in Zimbabwe Cricket History
Zimbabwe cricket star Brendan Taylor has etched his name in the nation’s cricketing annals after becoming only the third Zimbabwean batter to surpass 10,000 runs in international cricket.
The 39-year-old achieved the feat during Zimbabwe’s second ODI against Sri Lanka at Harare Sports Club on Sunday.
Taylor reached the milestone with a 20-run innings off 37 balls, coming back strongly after a duck in the first ODI of the series. With this, his career tally now stands at 10,009 runs in 320 innings across 287 matches, with an average of 33.92, including 17 centuries and 57 half-centuries.

Joining Legendary Company
By reaching the 10,000-run mark, Taylor joins an exclusive club alongside Zimbabwe legends Andy and Grant Flower. Andy leads with 11,580 runs, while Grant has 10,028. Taylor has also surpassed Andy Flower in career centuries, holding the national record with 17, and is just one match shy of equalling Grant’s 288 caps — only Hamilton Masakadza (313) has more appearances.

A Career of Triumphs and Challenges
Taylor’s cricket journey began in earnest with a memorable 60 not out against Australia in Cape Town during the ICC World Twenty20 in 2007. He rose to prominence as ODI captain after the 2011 World Cup, guiding Zimbabwe back to Test cricket with a maiden Test century and a landmark victory over Pakistan shortly after.
Despite challenges including sparse fixtures and struggles away from home, Taylor played a pivotal role on and off the field, unifying players in negotiations over unpaid salaries and the formation of a players’ association.
Retirement, Ban, and Comeback
Taylor briefly stepped away from international cricket after the 2015 World Cup, signing a Kolpak deal with Nottinghamshire. He returned to Zimbabwe in 2018 due to homesickness, resuming his Test career against West Indies after nearly three years.
In January 2022, Taylor announced a shocking revelation of an attempted blackmail and match-fixing approach in 2019, which led to a three-and-a-half-year ban from ICC cricket for delayed reporting.
He made his much-anticipated return in August 2025, scoring 44 runs in his first game against New Zealand.
