City Power says its new R200 monthly fee applies only to its 250,000 prepaid customers.
It said post-paid customers, who receive their bills at the end of the month, are already charged service fees.
As of Monday, the power utility started charging its prepaid customers a compulsory fee for service and network capacity.
The fee will be deducted from the customers’ purchase of electricity.
The utility’s general manager for pricing and tariffs, Frank Hinda, said post-paid customers are paying more than R200 a month on basic service charges.
“They are paying much more for basic charges. It is equivalent for them of R900 already and it’s been coming on for a number of years around at that level.
“That is mainly because based on the cost of supply studies that we have done and based on the nature and looking at the nature of the operation.”
