Controversial social media blogger Musa Khawula was arrested at the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court in the Western Cape on Tuesday, 9 July.
The arrest of the outspoken blogger took place while he made his appearance for his ongoing murder trial.
Khawula is facing a murder charge for stabbing his ex-boyfriend Wandile Khambule to death in March 2022 in Vredenburg.
According to Sunday World, a sherrif of the court arrived after Khawula’s appearance in court on Tuesday to inform the magistrate that there was a warrant of arrest for the blogger pertaining to a civil case in Gauteng.
National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Western Cape spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed Khawula’s arrest. He said his murder case was remanded to 7 August 2024 for judicial review.
The civil case against Khawula comes after he accused Nozuko Mbalula — the wife of ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula – as well as her business partner, Michelle Perrow, of obtaining dubious government tenders.
In Khawula’s X posts dated 8 May, he alleged Nozuko and Perrow were involved in a R150m million fraud and corruption scandal.
On 28 May, Judge Nicolene Janse van Nieuwenhuizen declared in an order that Khawula’s publication of the allegations was unlawful.
The judge ordered the social media influencer to retract the statement within 48 hours by deleting the thread of statements from social media.
She also ordered that Khawula be interdicted from conducting any interviews or posting statements on X or any other social media platforms that implied that Nozuko and Perrow were involved in fraud and corruption.
In addition, the judge ruled that he was liable to pay R1 million in damages to both parties involved.
In March 2022, Sweetness Jaftha, who was the late Khambule’s girlfriend, spoke out on the murder incident involving Khawula.
She alleged that Khawula arrived at her house in Vredenburg and demanded to see Khambule.
“Khambule refused to speak to him and said he was not interested in what he wanted to say because he was not interested in him romantically. I then asked them to go [and] speak outside because there were other people in the house,” Jaftha was quoted by Sunday World at the time.
“When I checked to see what was happening outside, I saw Khawula running after Khambule with a big knife [and] stabbing him, he fell in front of my brother’s bakkie. I then asked one of my friends to go [and] try to stop what was happening. He stabbed him in his chest and at the back,” she said.
After a couple of seconds, Jaftha said she heard people screaming, “Don’t stab him”.
In a TikTok video last year, the gossip blogger confessed to fatally stabbing Khambule – who was a photographer. At the time he claimed that he was acting in self-defence when he stabbed his lover in the back and chest.
