Deputy Minister Sibanda Reaffirms Govt’s Commitment to Advancing STEM Education in Tertiary Institutions
The Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation and Technology Development, Simelisizwe Sibanda, has reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
He emphasized the importance of advancing STEM in Zimbabwe’s tertiary institutions.
“No Going Back on STEM, Declares Deputy Minister”
Speaking at Hillside Teachers’ College’s 67th graduation ceremony on Thursday, Sibanda emphasized that STEM is central to the nation’s development.
“There is no going back in the teaching of STEM in the country’s tertiary institutions,” he declared.
The Deputy Minister praised the institution for its role in strengthening Zimbabwe’s STEM agenda. Out of the graduating cohort, 150 students completed their studies in STEM-related fields.
“It is heartening to note that this college continues to contribute meaningfully to the Government’s vision of advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in our nation,” Sibanda said.
Empowering the Girl Child
Sibanda also underscored the importance of encouraging more female participation in STEM.
He applauded Hillside College for facilitating female students’ participation in the Women in STEM Expo.
“This inspires and encourages female participation in STEM,” he said, adding that deliberate strategies and incentives must be pursued to boost enrolment and completion rates, particularly for young women.
Beyond Graduation: A National Vision
The Deputy Minister reminded graduates that their achievements represent more than personal milestones—they are part of a broader national transformation.
“The ceremony is a symbolic convergence of achievement and aspiration, where the fruits of intellectual labour meet the seeds of national transformation,” he noted.
He hailed the graduates as torchbearers of a new educational paradigm, describing them as embodiments of Zimbabwe’s aspirations and a testament to the transformative power of heritage-based education.
