South Africa’s Dricus “Stillknocks” Du Plessis suffered his first UFC defeat since debuting in 2020, losing his middleweight title to Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319.
The Chicago United Center showdown ended with judges scoring the fight 50-44 in favour of Chimaev after a five-round ground battle.

Du Plessis Apologizes to His Fans in South Africa
After the bout, Du Plessis took to social media to apologise to his supporters.
“To everybody in South Africa, you all know this flag means the world to me. I am sorry to anyone I let down. I’ll be back stronger. South Africans, we rise and fight through adversity and we will show the world that they still don’t know what we know,” he said.
Massive Payday Despite Loss
Despite the defeat, Du Plessis walked away with an impressive payday, earning an estimated R54 million.
His haul included a base purse of R18 million, pay-per-view and promotional bonuses between R18–27 million, and compliance pay of R756,000.

While the R9 million win bonus eluded him, his earnings reflect his star power and standing in the UFC.
Chimaev, the Chechen-born Swedish fighter who claimed the middleweight crown, earned approximately R32.4 million, which included a R13.5 million base purse, a R9 million win bonus, PPV shares of R13.5–18 million, a R900,000 Performance of the Night bonus, and R576,000 in compliance pay.
South African Pride Intact
While the title slipped from Du Plessis’ grasp, his global profile and South African support remain strong. The Pretoria fighter’s performance and massive payday underscore his continued relevance and marketability on the world MMA stage.
