Eskom tenders: 2 unremorseful hitmen sentenced for killing 4 businessmen

2 unremorseful hitmen sentenced for killing 4 businessmen with Eskom tenders! Two hitmen, Walter Makhulu Malesela Mosotlha and Klaas Oscar Masilela, have been sentenced by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria for the murders of four businessmen who held a tender with Eskom.

The sentencing, which marks a significant conclusion to a series of calculated killings, was handed down after the court found both men guilty of multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder.

Walter Mosotlha, aged 39, received two life sentences for his role in the murders, as well as an additional eight years for attempted murder and five years for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. His partner, 41-year-old Klaas Masilela, was handed four life sentences, eight years for attempted murder, and five years for possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Gauteng spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Lumka Mahanjana, provided further details on the crimes. She explained that between January and April 2021, the two men were hired by a man known only as “Jack,” who remains at large.

Jack allegedly orchestrated the killings of the four businessmen from Nkangala, Mpumalanga, although his exact motives remain unclear. What is known is that the victims—Jabulani Kekana, Tshepo James Mahlangu, Motheo Makau, and Vincent Zondi Mamba—were targeted due to their involvement with an Eskom tender.

The first two murders occurred on January 27, 2021, at Eskom’s Kusile Lulamisa plant. Mahanjana recounted how Kekana and Mahlangu were speaking with a security guard at the gate when Mosotlha and Masilela approached and shot both men in the head, killing them instantly. This brazen attack sent shockwaves through the community, but it was just the beginning of the duo’s killing spree.

Mahanjana continued, detailing how the hitmen later targeted Makau and Mamba, killing them on separate occasions while they were driving. In both instances, the gunmen also attempted to kill passengers who were with the businessmen, indicating a reckless disregard for life beyond their intended targets.

Following these brutal murders, law enforcement launched a comprehensive investigation. On July 26, 2021, Masilela was arrested at his residence in KwaMhlanga. During questioning, he pointed out Mosotlha as his accomplice, leading to Mosotlha’s arrest the following day. Both men have been in custody since their arrests and have consistently denied their involvement in the killings.

Despite their claims of innocence, the State presented substantial evidence in court that led to their conviction. The prosecuting team highlighted the hitmen’s cold, calculated actions and their refusal to show any remorse throughout the trial. Even after being convicted, Mosotlha and Masilela continued to deny responsibility for the murders, a fact that the State used to argue for the harsh sentences handed down by the court.

One of the key arguments put forward by the State was that the men’s actions were driven by jealousy and greed. The victims were not just businessmen but also breadwinners who provided for their families. Their deaths have left a devastating impact on their loved ones, who now struggle to cope with both the emotional and financial fallout of the murders.

The sentences—multiple life terms for both Walter Makhulu Malesela Mosotlha and Klaas Oscar Masilela—reflect the severity of their crimes. The court’s decision to impose harsh penalties underscores the gravity of their offenses and serves as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to engage in similar acts of violence for financial gain.

As the manhunt for the mastermind, Jack, continues, police and the NPA are working to ensure that justice is fully served for the families of the four murdered businessmen. In the meantime, the conviction and sentencing of Mosotlha and Masilela provide a sense of closure for a community left reeling by the brutal, senseless killings.
