Former Aces Boss Explains Why Tendai Ndoro Chose Orlando Pirates Over Kaizer Chiefs
The late Tendai Ndoro’s move to Orlando Pirates, instead of their fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs, has finally been explained.
Former Mpumalanga Black Aces co-chairman Mario Morfou revealed that while Chiefs were keen on signing Ndoro, the striker himself preferred to join the Buccaneers. Morfou, who played a major role in bringing Ndoro to South Africa, said the decision came down to the player’s wishes and the deal that was ultimately agreed with Pirates.
From Chicken Inn to South African Football
Ndoro, who passed away at the age of 40 after being found in his Johannesburg apartment, made a name for himself in South African football with stints at Pirates, Ajax Cape Town, and Highlands Park. Before joining Pirates, Aces had been negotiating with Chiefs, who were also eager to secure the talented forward.
Morfou told KickOff.com that Ndoro stood out not just for his skills on the pitch but also for his character off it. He said the player’s preference and Pirates’ interest made the transfer a natural fit.
“Ndoro’s passing is terrible news. We are very saddened. He was a great human being, an exceptional player, and a genuinely nice man,” Morfou told KickOff.com.
Why Tendai Ndoro Chose Orlando Pirates Over Kaizer Chiefs
He recalled that Aces’ scouts had spotted Ndoro as a rising star in Zimbabwe, and after signing him, he performed impressively enough to attract bigger clubs. The striker eventually moved to Pirates, where he continued to excel.
“It’s very sad news. We were the ones who brought him to South Africa. We had scouts who went around looking for players, and they identified him. We decided to sign him, and he performed well for us before we sold him to Pirates. He was interested in joining Pirates, who also wanted him. I worked with the chairman (Dr. Irvin Khoza) to finalise the deal, and he went to Pirates, where he continued to excel. At heart, he was a Buccaneer,” he added.
Morfou also extended heartfelt condolences to Ndoro’s family and friends, praising the striker’s lasting legacy in football.
“Our deepest condolences go out to his friends and family. We know this is sad news, but at least he left us with wonderful memories in the football community. We wish his family all the best. It’s truly heartbreaking,” said Morfou.
