Harare Road Closures For Bicycle Day: Full Details And Timings
Harare motorists should brace for traffic chaos on 7 June 2025, as the City of Harare has announced widespread road closures in the Central Business District to mark World Bicycle Day. The disruptions will last for nine hours, from 6AM to 3PM, and several major roads will either be fully or partially closed.
“The public is being advised that there shall be a temporary road closure for the World Bicycle Day commemorations,” reads a public notice issued by Acting Town Clerk Engineer P.M. Moyo
Major Roads To Be Closed
According to the notice, the following roads will be affected:

-
Jason Moyo Avenue (one lane closed) between Leopold Takawira and Sam Nujoma
-

Motorists are being advised to plan ahead and consider alternative routes, as traffic will be heavily affected.
“Alternative routes will be recommended using informative signs and as directed by enforcement agents on site,”
the notice said.
Julius Nyerere Road Still Open
While most affected routes are in the heart of the city, the council indicated that Julius Nyerere Way will remain open, though traffic will be controlled at intersections.
“Julius Nyerere traffic will be controlled by officers at intersections,” the City of Harare confirmed.
The local authority urged drivers to exercise extreme caution.
“Traffic approaching the above site should do so with due care,” Engineer Moyo added.
Public Reaction Mixed
Some residents welcomed the initiative to promote cycling and alternative transport. Others expressed concern over congestion.
“It’s a good thing to promote health and the environment,” said a commuter who frequents the CBD.
“But I hope they’ll manage the traffic properly. That area is always chaotic even without closures,” another motorist said.
The event is part of global commemorations for World Bicycle Day, which was declared by the United Nations in 2018 to encourage sustainable transportation.
