Suspicious Disappearance Raises Alarm
According to The Herald, Mzilikazi’s trust was shaken when his maid, Sarah Matemarunda (59), called him the following day, claiming that farm hand Milton Mudimu (24) had suddenly vanished, leaving her worried about the welfare of the chickens. Attempts by Mzilikazi to contact Mudimu were unsuccessful.
When Mzilikazi returned on August 12, he was shocked to find his bedroom door unlocked and his wall-mounted digital safe missing.
The safe had contained US$80 400 in cash, R4 000, live rounds of ammunition, and other foreign currencies, including 300 Yuan, 200 Dirhams, 100 Rupees, and 30 Pounds.
Safe Found Dumped in Car Boot
Further inspection revealed the empty safe hidden in the boot of his son’s Honda Fit, alongside the ammunition and several Zimbabwean passports.
The farmer immediately reported the theft to the police.
Maid Confesses and Leads Police to Hidden Stash
During questioning, Matemarunda cracked under pressure and led police to her hidden stash of cash. Inside her suitcase, investigators found US$12 391, R1 360, 10 Pounds, 50 Rupees, 5 Dirhams, and 100 Yuan. Her confession pointed to Mudimu as her accomplice.
Farm Hand Fled to South Africa
Investigations revealed that Mudimu had fled across the border into South Africa in an attempt to evade justice. With assistance from his relatives, authorities tracked him down and apprehended him after he had crossed illegally.
Court Proceedings Begin
Both Matemarunda and Mudimu have since been charged with theft. They were remanded in custody when they appeared before Harare Magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai and are expected to return to court today for their bail application.
