FIFA President Mourns Former Zimbabwe Forward Tendai Ndoro

World football boss Gianni Infantino has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Zimbabwean striker Tendai Ndoro. The 40-year-old former Orlando Pirates forward was found dead in his Sandton apartment in South Africa on Monday. Ndoro, who also played for Mpumalanga Black Aces, Ajax Cape Town, and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Faisaly, had been living a quiet life in recent years.

In a letter to Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) President Nqobile Magwizi, Infantino extended his heartfelt condolences and paid tribute to Ndoro’s career. He acknowledged the difficulty of putting into words the sadness caused by the loss of such a respected figure in world football.

“I would like to express my sincerest and heartfelt condolences on the passing of former international
player, Tendai Ndoro. Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel for this loss.”

FIFA Celebrates His Football Career

The FIFA president highlighted Ndoro’s contributions both to club and country. He noted that Ndoro was regularly called up for Zimbabwe’s national team and featured in the 2017 CAF African Cup of Nations. At club level, Ndoro represented Zimbabwe’s Chicken Inn FC and South African teams, including Orlando Pirates, while also playing abroad in Saudi Arabia and Oman.

“During his international career, Tendai Ndoro was regularly capped by Zimbabwe and notably
Participated in the 2017 CAF African Cup of Nations. At club level, he defended the colours of Chicken
Inn FC in his home country, as well as several South African clubs, including Orlando Pirates FC. He
also played in Saudi Arabia and Oman.”

A Legend On and Off the Pitch

Infantino also celebrated Ndoro as a “legend of Zimbabwe football,” praising his talent, resilience, and leadership. He emphasised that Ndoro’s influence extended beyond the pitch, inspiring young footballers and earning admiration for his character, popularity, and humanity.

“Legend of Zimbabwe football, known for his talent and resilience, inspiration for many young footballers, his legacy and achievements, and in particular his personality, his leadership, his popularity and his human qualities will not be forgotten, and he will be truly missed. On behalf of the international football community, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the Zimbabwe Football Association and to Tendai Ndoro’s family, friends and loved ones. Our thoughts are with all of you. We hope that these memories and our words of support may help bring some peace and solace at this difficult time.”
