The flames broke out just after 2 pm and quickly consumed the lodge. By late afternoon, the Bulawayo Fire Brigade was still battling the inferno with four fire tenders and 20 firefighters on the scene. Although the fire was eventually contained, nothing could be saved.

Famous History, Tragic Loss

The lodge, owned by businessman Tony Do Santos, once hosted big names such as the world-famous band UB40. Its destruction marks yet another blow, as this is the second time the establishment has been gutted by fire in as many years.

The full value of the damage is still being assessed, but early reports suggest the losses are extensive.
