The Government has issued a fresh statement clarifying that the upcoming Munhumutapa Day, observed on September 15, does not constitute an official public holiday. This confirmation comes to dispel any circulating rumours that might have suggested a day off for the nation.
Businesses, schools, and all public services are therefore expected to operate on a normal schedule without any interruption to the working week. The day is intended for remembrance and reflection, not for nationwide leisure.
Government Confirms Munhumutapa Day is a Commemoration, Not a Holiday
The clarification was delivered authoritatively by the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe. He firmly stated that the day had not been designated as a holiday through any official channel.

Minister Kazembe was quoted as saying,
“We have not been given that instruction. The day was never declared a holiday; should there be a proposal for the day to be a holiday, normal procedure will be followed. But it is a day set aside to remember the Munhumutapa Day.”
A Day for Reflection, Not Relaxation
The minister’s comments underscore the Government’s position that the day holds significant cultural and historical importance, warranting commemoration rather than celebration with a day off. The emphasis remains on honouring the legacy of the Munhumutapa Empire, a powerful pre-colonial state in Southern Africa.

The day also happens to be the current President E.D Mnangagwa’s birthday. The official line confirms that any future proposal to elevate the day to a public holiday status would have to undergo the standard, formal governmental procedures. For now, the public is urged to mark the day within the context of their normal daily routines.
