Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has announced the closure of roads to facilitate the construction of the Mabvuku interchange. Starting Tuesday, September 9, 2025, traffic in the Mabvuku area will be temporarily redirected to alternative routes. However, the timeline for the project’s completion has not yet been disclosed.
These detours are necessary to ensure that the interchange—a vital upgrade for improving traffic flow—can be constructed safely and efficiently. The temporary routes are designed to protect both drivers and construction workers during the rehabilitation process.
The Ministry has assured the public that clear signage will be placed to help guide motorists through the detours, aiming to minimise disruptions and ensure smooth travel.
Motorists are encouraged to plan their trips ahead of time, adhere to the posted signs, and exercise caution while navigating the temporary routes.
In a statement, the Ministry emphasised the importance of the construction work, stating:
“The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development wishes to inform the motoring public and all road users that traffic will be diverted to detour routes for the purposes of the construction of the Mabvuku Interchange construction project.
Detour will be opened to traffic on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, to facilitate smooth and safe rehabilitation works. This temporary diversion has been necessitated by the commencement of the construction of the Mabvuku Interchange, ensuring the safety of both motorists and construction personnel while allowing progress on the upgrades.
Clear signage will be in place to guide motorists through the alternative routes. The Ministry regrets any inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during this period.”
While the announcement was welcomed, some Zimbabweans questioned why other road projects have not been prioritised and raised concerns about ongoing traffic challenges elsewhere. Many felt that roads in other regions or key congested areas needed urgent attention.
Here are some of the comments:
@stanmabuka:
It would be nice to quickly complete the more than 30km of unfinished work on the Masvingo-Beitbridge road. This road must be a priority. In my view, it can be self-funding through a BOT wherein you grant access to 2 toll gates to the financier.
@MUKANYA30:
Why is it that it’s now more than a year since Samora Machel West was resurfaced, but the road has no markings which demarcate lanes?
@tgapu:
Thank you for the notice. What are the timelines for this project to completion?
@Wekwagatsi:
It would also have made sense to resurface and tar Chiremba Road from Ruwa to Epworth and divert traffic that way as well.
@tafasha:
When will you address the Msasa Roundabout traffic jam?
