Harare Legal Clerk Arrested After Impersonating A CID Detective To Blackmail Businessman

The police arrested a Harare-based legal clerk and is being charged after impersonating a CID detective in order to blackmail a businessman.

The legal clerk finds himself in legal trouble after allegedly pretending to be a police detective in an attempted extortion case that unfolded in the capital city last week.

Court Appearance Following Fraud Allegations

Adiel Shingai Mushore, an employee of Munangati and Associates law firm, appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo over the weekend. The accused did not enter a plea during the initial court proceedings.

The case involves businessman Maxwell Munyanyi, who operates several commuter omnibuses servicing the City-Hatcliffe route. According to court documents, the alleged incident occurred on August 6 when Mushore reportedly approached one of Munyanyi’s drivers at Simon Muzenda Bus Terminus.

Prosecutors claim Mushore identified himself as a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer and falsely accused the driver of obstructing the Police Commissioner General’s vehicle at a Harare intersection. The legal clerk allegedly demanded payment to remove the kombi (registration ACQ 6606) from a supposed police blacklist.

The driver reportedly paid $10 before informing his employer about the encounter. This led Munyanyi to arrange a meeting with Mushore the following day at Munhumutapa Building to resolve the alleged blacklist issue.

Businessman’s Quick Thinking Foils Scheme

During their meeting, Mushore allegedly repeated his claims of being a CID detective and escalated his demands, stating the matter now involved presidential intervention. Sensing something amiss, Munyanyi cleverly lured the suspect into his vehicle under the pretense of discussing the payment.

Instead of negotiating, the businessman drove directly to CID Headquarters to verify Mushore’s credentials. As they arrived, the suspect reportedly panicked, attempted to flee on foot toward Josiah Tongogara Avenue, but was apprehended by the quick-acting kombi operator.
