New Zealand Bowler Nathan Smith Ruled Out of Second Test Against Zimbabwe

New Zealand fast-bowling all-rounder Nathan Smith has been ruled out of the second Test against Zimbabwe due to an abdominal strain.

The injury occurred on day two of the first Test in Bulawayo while Smith was batting. An MRI scan later confirmed the strain, and he is expected to be sidelined for two to four weeks.

Smith had earlier made a notable contribution in the first innings, taking 3 for 20 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 149.

He also scored a gritty 22 off 79 balls before retiring hurt and did not return to the field for the remainder of the match.

Zakary Foulkes Gets Test Call-Up

In Smith’s absence, 24-year-old Zakary Foulkes has earned his maiden Test call-up. A pace-bowling all-rounder, Foulkes has represented New Zealand in 13 T20Is and 1 ODI, and was part of the squad that won the recent tri-series against Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Foulkes has played 19 first-class matches, claiming 57 wickets and scoring 544 runs at an average of 19.42. His addition adds depth and youthful energy to the New Zealand squad ahead of the second Test.

Lister Added as Cover for O’Rourke

Meanwhile, Ben Lister, a left-arm fast bowler, has also been drafted into the squad as cover for Will O’Rourke, who reported back stiffness during the first Test. O’Rourke, who took 3 for 28 in Zimbabwe’s second innings, bowled 23 overs across both innings and is being closely monitored.

Lister, although yet to play a Test match, has featured in 3 ODIs and 12 T20Is for New Zealand. His last international appearance was over a year ago during the Pakistan tour.

Second Test to Begin on August 7

New Zealand go into the second Test with momentum after a convincing nine-wicket victory in Bulawayo, with Matt Henry starring with 9 for 90 across both innings.

It is still unclear whether regular Test captain Tom Latham, who missed the opening match due to a shoulder injury, will be fit in time for the second encounter. The Test is scheduled to begin on August 7 at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo.
