Villagers have been left horrified after a hyena kills a drunk man who was walking home from a tavern late in the night.
A quiet evening at a local drinking establishment in Mutoko ended in unimaginable horror for one family after a 53-year-old man was attacked and killed by a hyena. The incident occurred on the evening of 30 August.
The victim, identified as Tendai Pasi, had been at a bar in Katsukunya Township and was making his way home when the tragic event unfolded. The alarm was first raised after he failed to return home that night. His wife, Ashley Kachidza (48), and their 13-year-old son initiated a search the following morning.
Inspector Simon Chazovachiyi, the Mashonaland East Province police spokesperson, provided a detailed account of the discovery.
‘The following morning, Ashley Kachidza and her son Christ Pasi realised Tendai Pasi had not returned home and began a search,’ he stated. ‘During the search, the two came across one of his shoes on the roadside. They then noticed a trail of blood on the grass and signs of a struggle where he appeared to have been dragged.’

Tracing the trail, the family made a devastating discovery approximately ten metres from the road. There, they found Tendai Pasi’s body, which showed clear signs of a savage animal attack. The police and officials from the Criminal Investigations Department were immediately notified and attended the scene.
‘The body was found with its hands and stomach ripped open,’ Inspector Chazovachiyi confirmed. ‘Hyena spoor was identified all around the scene and some of the body parts had been eaten, including the shoulders, left arm, and parts of the stomach. This provides clear evidence that he was consumed by wild animals.’
The body was subsequently transported to Mutoko Hospital for a formal post-mortem examination by medical professionals. Authorities also contacted experts from the Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority to conduct their own investigation into the tragic event.

Wildlife Authorities Confirm Tragic Circumstances
The official findings from the wildlife authorities have confirmed the police’s initial assessment, ruling out any possibility of foul play from another person. The investigation concluded that the man was indeed the victim of a deadly encounter with wildlife. Inspector Chazovachiyi reiterated this conclusion, stating,
‘Officials from the Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority were informed, they came and conducted their investigations which revealed that he was killed by wild animals and therefore there is no other speculation we can make that the man could have been murdered.’
