“I Just Want a Decent Life”: Former Uzalo Actor Glen Gabela Breaks Down in Tears as He Appeals for Help
Former Uzalo actor Glen Gabela has made an emotional plea for help, revealing that he is struggling to make ends meet and longs to live a decent life again.
The veteran actor is best known for his roles in the 1986 miniseries Shaka Zulu, Yizo Yizo, and Uzalo.
A video showing his heartbreaking living conditions has since gone viral.
The footage, filmed in his home, shows a dusty bedroom lined with his acting accolades, a mouldy fridge containing only bottles of water, and an almost empty cupboard.
The clip has sparked an outpouring of sympathy from fans and the entertainment industry.
“I Just Want a Decent Life”
In the emotional video, Gabela tearfully appealed to the public for assistance, expressing his desire to live with dignity.
“I want a decent life. I want to live decently like every normal person, which is why I make these attempts to engage with people. I’ve grown the film industry so the young and upcoming performers don’t end up like us. I want their lives to be better, I don’t want them to live the life we live,” he said.
He reflected on the struggles faced by many actors later in life, noting that it is often only after their passing that the extent of their hardships is revealed.
A Struggle Shared by Many
Gabela’s candid account sheds light on the plight of many veteran actors in South Africa, who, despite years of contribution to the industry, often find themselves in financial distress.
“It’s a pity I am not able to ask for help. It’s hard for me to ask for help. That’s all I need — just to live decently. I don’t need to be rich, I just need to live a decent life,” he added.
Public Reaction and Support
Following the release of the video, Glen Gabela’s name trended across social media platforms as fans and concerned South Africans discussed ways to support him. His appeal has reignited calls for greater support systems for artists in the country, especially those who helped shape the local television and film landscape.
