Starlink In Zimbabwe: A Timeline

Some users acquired Starlink kits from neighbouring countries and used them in Zimbabwe under roaming mode. Although functional, this method incurred additional roaming fees and was not officially sanctioned by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ).

Others purchased Starlink equipment through third-party resellers who imported the kits from countries like Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, where Starlink was already operational.

In April, POTRAZ demanded Starlink halt its services in Zimbabwe until it obtained the necessary licensing. In spite of this request, the internet service continued operating in the country through roaming.

Enter IMC Communications

In May, President Emmerson Mnangagwa gave POTRAZ the greenlight to license Starlink, allowing it to legally provide satellite internet services in the country. He announced that Starlink would partner with IMC Communications, owned by Wicknell Chivayo.

POTRAZ initially granted IMC exclusive rights to distribute and resell Starlink services in Zimbabwe. However, in July, director-general Dr Gift Machengete explained that the body does not issue exclusive licenses for telecommunication services, including internet services.
