A Khami prisoner has landed himself additional time behind bars after biting off a fellow inmate’s tongue off during a fight.
A routine day at Bulawayo’s Khami Prison descended into a scene of horrific violence when a convicted murderer bit off a portion of a fellow inmate’s tongue during a brutal confrontation.
The attacker, Dumisani Sibanda, who is already serving a lengthy sentence, found himself back before a magistrate this week to answer for the gruesome assault that has left the prison community in shock.

The court heard from prosecutor Audrey Kufandikanwe that the incident on July 20th began with a verbal altercation. What started as a heated exchange of insults between Sibanda and the victim, Clement Maphosa, rapidly escalated beyond control.

“Despite attempts by other inmates to restrain the two individuals, Sibanda pursued Maphosa when he tried to retreat from the confrontation,” Kufandikanwe stated.
The prosecutor detailed how Sibanda then head-butted Maphosa, causing him to fall to the ground, before proceeding to strangle him.
It was during the strangulation that the attack took a truly vicious turn. As Maphosa struggled for breath, his tongue protruded from his mouth. Seizing the opportunity, Sibanda committed an act of sheer brutality.
“Sibanda bit off a piece of the complainant’s tongue and spat it on the ground,” Kufandikanwe told the visibly stunned courtroom.
Fellow prisoners eventually managed to pull the assailant away, and guards were called to the scene. Maphosa was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital to receive urgent medical treatment for his grievous injury.
Additional Sentence Handed Down
Facing Western Commonage magistrate Archie Wochiwunga, Sibanda entered a guilty plea to a charge of assault. In his ruling, the magistrate emphasised the severity of the unprovoked violence and handed Sibanda an effective six-month prison sentence, to be served concurrently with his existing term.

Magistrate Wochiwunga issued a stern warning to Sibanda against any future misconduct, stating that the court would not tolerate such behaviour within the correctional system. The sentence includes a suspended portion, meaning Sibanda will face further time behind bars if he reoffends within three years.
