Lotus Gardens SGB responds to DA school claims

The DA’s recent site visit to the Lotus Gardens Secondary School premises has been described as an attempt by the school’s governing body (SGB) to score political brownie points.

In late September, Khathutshelo Rasilingwane, the DA Gauteng spokesperson for Infrastructure Development said that Lotus Gardens Secondary learners were being taught in dilapidated classrooms with leaking roofs, damaged ceilings, and non-functioning toilets.

Rasilinwane claimed this was due to the delays by the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) in fixing the school.

She added that the project that commenced in 2022 was meant to be completed by now.

“While the DA notes the reported timeline and the commitment to monitor this project, we cannot ignore that the DID has failed to complete projects on time and within budget. Learners are at the losing end of the stick as they have to endure being taught in an environment that is not conducive and severely impacts the delivery of quality education,” Rasilingwane said.

She also said that this is one of many projects by DID that have been delayed and negatively affected the delivery of services to communities across the province.

In response, the MEC for Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo, stated that the construction would be completed within 16 months and that they would monitor the progress.

Chairperson of the SGB, Marjorie Mahlangu has since contacted Rekord and denounced the findings made by the DA during their visit.

“Please note the information given by DA is incorrect as per the article. At the moment our learners and educators are safe.

“The department has built decent temporary mobile classes behind the school. At the moment the old school is barricaded, and no one is in the old premises.

“As the SGB chairperson of the school, everyone is safe and teaching and learning are running smoothly. We also confirmed that we are in communication with the Department of Education concerning the progress of renovating the old school,” Mahlangu said.

Mhalangu accused the DA of using the school’s name for political purposes and emphasized that the developments the school is undergoing are credited to their work and the parents, not the DA.

“As parents, we fought our fight alone without any political assistance for the past four years and we won our battle.

One [parent] asked ‘Why now?’ Please they must refrain from using our school name to fight their political battle. We will shout if we need their assistance but at the moment we are fine,” Mahlangu concluded.
