Sungura music pioneer Nicholas “Madzibaba” Zakaria has asked Zimbabweans to keep him in their prayers as he battles a serious illness.

Fans began to worry about Madzibaba’s health after he failed to attend a recent family show at Zebra Village. The legendary musician later confirmed that he’s been unwell for a while, saying he could only send his band, sound equipment, and Franco to represent him at the show.

“I just managed to send my band and PA system, and my son Franco, to our family show.”

News of his illness has drawn a wave of support from fans and fellow musicians alike, with many expressing their love and concern for the veteran artist.

In Madzibaba’s absence, Franco Slomo kept the show alive and urged the sungura community to unite. He encouraged musicians to stop wasting time fighting and instead come together in prayer for the genre’s living legend.

“Let us stop spending time on sungura music wars and spend it on praying for the living legend of this genre. Let us stop pointing fingers at each other,” Franco Slomo said.

Another respected sungura figure, Kireni Zulu, weighed in with a message to fellow artists. He called on musicians to stand by each other during difficult times instead of waiting to show love only after someone dies. Kireni Zulu said:

“If one of us gets sick as an artist, we must know and we must visit each other, socialising and listening to their challenges. We must assist each other rather than pretend to have loved a person after his or her death by buying food or coffins. John Chibadura never attacked the Chimbetus, Okavango Boys never clashed with Tineyi Chikupo.”
