United Nations (UN) member states have adopted ‘A Pact For The Future’ as the UN’s flagship ‘Summit of the Future’ kicked off in New York in the US, but not without controversy. Russia sought to block the adoption of the consensus driven pact that includes a Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations that seeks to reshape multilateral institutions to better respond to the complex challenges facing the international community.
This includes the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and reshaping global financial institutions. Russia’s objections were rejected by the Assembly that took a vote to take no action on Moscow’s amendment to block the adoption.
That allowed the Assembly to proceed with the consensus adoption of the ‘Pact of the Future’ despite the objections of some member states – including Russian allies Iran, Venezuela, the DPRK, Belarus, Syria and Nicaragua.
