Number 20 is yours forever: Liverpool retires Diogo Jota’s No. 20 jersey
Liverpool FC has officially retired the No. 20 jersey in honour of Diogo Jota, following the tragic death of the Portuguese forward. The decision comes after a season in which Jota helped secure Liverpool’s 20th league title and left behind a legacy that club officials say “will be rightly immortalised.”
“The No. 20 will be rightly immortalised for his contributions as part of Liverpool’s 2024-25 title-winners,” said a statement shared by ESPN FC on X at 20:50 on July 3, 2025.
“His trademark shimmy and strike in front of the Kop to seal victory in April’s Merseyside derby [was] a poignant last goal of his life.”
A number full of meaning
The symbolism of No. 20 runs deep for Liverpool fans. Jota wore the number, helped deliver the club’s 20th league title, and passed away in 2025 at the age of 28.
“Joined in 2020. Wore the number 20. Won number 20,” wrote The Anfield Buzz, adding,
“Number 20 is yours, forever, Diogo.”
He joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and made an immediate impact. By his 21st appearance, he had already scored 10 goals, including a memorable Champions League hat-trick against Atalanta. He went on to lift multiple trophies, including the Carabao Cup, FA Cup, and the Premier League.
“To arrive at this particular season with the title that I’ve been chasing for a lot of years and in the best league in the world – for me where I dreamed to play as a kid – it’s a moment I will cherish forever,” Jota once said.
Fans and club pay tribute
Fans across the world expressed their grief and admiration on social media.
“Forever number 20 in Liverpool’s history,” wrote @customwyd.
“Some numbers go far beyond the back of a shirt – they carry memories, emotion, and pride,” posted @f2o_sports.
“Diogo Jota’s 20 will live on with the fans forever.”
Jota’s career began in Portugal at Paços de Ferreira before stints at FC Porto and Wolves. He joined Liverpool with a reputation for clinical finishing, quick feet, and a fierce work ethic.
His crowning moment came in April 2025, when he scored in the Merseyside derby in front of the Kop – his last goal before his tragic passing in a road accident. His final months were filled with joy: winning the Premier League, lifting the UEFA Nations League with Portugal, and marrying his long-time partner, Rute, on June 22. The couple had three children.
Liverpool FC’s tribute, titled “He Took Us To Victory – A Tribute to Diogo Jota”, reflected on his remarkable impact and enduring legacy:
“He will take us to victory,” sang the Liverpool fans in his honour – and Diogo Jota so often did exactly that.”
His name will now live on, not just in memories, but on banners, shirts, and in the very culture of Liverpool FC. The number 20 shirt will never be worn again.
RIP Diogo Jota, 1996–2025.
