A sign directing visitors to King Mzilikazi’s grave has sparked concern over its deteriorating condition.
Former Education Minister David Coltart shared a picture of the sign on Facebook.
According to Coltart, the sign has stood along the Old Gwanda Road for more than 50 years.
However, its condition has now become difficult to ignore.
The sign appears ramshackle, crooked, faded and unclear, according to Coltart.
He believes its current state does not reflect the importance of the historical site.
“This is the current sign on the Old Gwanda road to King Mzilikazi’s grave,” Coltart wrote.
“It has been there for over 50 years.”
Coltart also described the condition as “totally unbecoming and inappropriate” for a royal memorial.
King Mzilikazi founded the Ndebele kingdom after leaving the Zulu kingdom under King Shaka.
His grave remains an important historical site connected to the history of the Ndebele people.
Roads and surroundings also need attention
Meanwhile, Coltart has raised concerns about the roads leading to the historic grave.
He said both the Old Gwanda and Fort Usher roads require significant repairs.
The problems reportedly extend beyond the boundaries of the City of Bulawayo.
Coltart also highlighted litter and the poor appearance of the surrounding roads.
He said the relevant Rural District Council should take responsibility for cleaning the area.
The concerns come ahead of future commemorations of King Mzilikazi Day.
Coltart believes authorities should act before the next commemoration.
The issue therefore goes beyond a single damaged road sign.
It raises wider questions about preserving important historical sites and presenting them with dignity.
For visitors, the journey to such a significant site should reflect its historical importance.
