“Mere Hocus Pocus”: Govt Spokesperson Dismisses Witchcraft After Natalie Mhandu’s Arrest

Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana has stirred conversation after publicly rubbishing the idea of witchcraft. His remarks follow news that socialite Natalie Mhandu, better known as Enchantress, was taken to court by her friends over allegations of practising witchcraft.

Nick Mangwana Dismisses Witchcraft Claims

Posting on his verified X account on Thursday, 8 August 2025, Mangwana made it clear he sees no truth in such claims, describing them as nothing more than superstition and nonsense. He wrote:

“This witchcraft mumbo jumbo is just that; mere hocus pocus and occult gibberish.”

Mixed Reactions from Zimbabweans

The post quickly attracted attention, with Zimbabweans responding in mixed ways. Some urged Mangwana to focus on pressing national issues such as corruption, while others felt he was dismissing cultural beliefs too easily. A few even took the opportunity to throw playful jabs at him.

Here are some of the comments:

@rainier787:
Who cares about this. What I care about is the report from Matanda Moyo that Zimbabwe loses 1.8b USD to corruption annually and not seeing any meaningful action.
@Lotus1457956:

@MikeWayne80:
A black man in Zimbabwe dismissing a story about witchcraft raises a lot of questions. Having British citizenship doesn’t make you white. Chivanhu chiriko, and you know it

@ZimParrot:

You are the evidence that witchcraft is real. Zvimwe zvinhu zvaunonyora pano kaaa🙌
