Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe has issued a chilling warning to police officers ahead of the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.
He said this at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development launch of the Heroes and Defence Forces Holidays Road Safety awareness campaign at Rainbow Towers Hotel on 7 August 2024.
Minister Kazembe Kazembe Issues Chilling Warning To Drivers And Police Officers Ahead Of Heroes Holiday
The nation commemorates Heroes Day on 12 August 2024 and Defence Forces Day on Tuesday, 13 August. Because many usually travel during the long holidays, Zimbabwe experiences more accidents.
Minister Kazembe Kazembe has warned errant drivers and police officers in a bid to curb road carnage:
“I was just talking to my colleague (Transport and Infrastructural Development) Minister Felix Mhona, and we agreed that all buses should be checked before leaving any bus terminus to ensure that they have all the required documents to be on the road and that they are not overloaded as this also contributes to accidents.
“I have also directed Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga to ensure that we are also policing the police. The police must also be policed. We have a responsibility to ensure that people abide by traffic laws, but you realise that there are some syndicates involving police and VID officers linked to corruption. I have directed the police that we now have to go backwards and check the route. Did this vehicle pass through a roadblock, and what happened? And those people who let the vehicle pass must be answerable, individually or severally”.
The Minister stated that if a bus crashes after passing through a roadblock without the required documents, they would chase the police officers at the checkpoints along the way.
The 2023 Heroes Holiday Accident Statistics
During the 2023 Heroes and Defence Forces Holidays, the country witnessed 132 traffic accidents. Fifteen people perished in the crashes, while 85 sustained injuries.
ZRP national spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said overtaking errors, speeding and misjudgement caused most accidents.
