Ministry Of Transport Exceeds Mid-Year Budget Allocation, Government Promises More Interchanges Like Trabablas

Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube recently disclosed that the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has become the only government department that exceeded its mid-year budget allocation.

The ministry had been allocated 5.444 billion Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) for the first half of the year, but ultimately expended 6.305 billion ZiG – representing a 16% budget overrun.

Strategic Investments Yield Tangible Results

Despite the budget overextension, Minister Ncube praised the ministry’s accomplishments, particularly highlighting the successful completion of the transformative Trabablas Interchange.

The minister further announced plans to replicate similar interchange projects nationwide to modernise Zimbabwe’s transportation network.

The Zimbabwean government continues to prioritise transportation infrastructure as a fundamental driver of economic expansion. A substantial ZiG7.9 billion investment in the sector has primarily supported the comprehensive Road Development Programme, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to creating efficient transport linkages that stimulate commerce at local, regional, and international levels.

The recently inaugurated Trabablas Interchange, officially opened by President E.D. Mnangagwa on May 30, 2025, stands as the period’s most notable achievement.

This state-of-the-art multi-level structure has effectively resolved chronic traffic bottlenecks and safety concerns at the former Mbudzi Roundabout, which had become increasingly inadequate for growing traffic volumes. The project significantly improves connectivity along vital regional trade routes.

Other Road Rehabilitation Projects Underway

Attention has now turned to the critical Bulawayo-Victoria Falls highway, identified as requiring immediate rehabilitation. This essential artery not only facilitates cross-border commerce but also provides access to Zimbabwe’s premier tourist attractions, including Hwange National Park and the iconic Victoria Falls. The upgrades aim to enhance both economic and tourism-related traffic flow along this strategic corridor.
