Mutare Man Jailed for 3 Years After Robbing 9-Year-Old of His Bicycle with Okapi Knife
A 43-year-old Mutare man has been sentenced to three years in prison after he robbed a 9-year-old boy of his bicycle at knifepoint in a chilling incident that left the child traumatised.

Shocking Attack in Broad Daylight
Fungai Chihono, from Chisamba Village under Chief Zimunya in Mutare, was convicted by the Mutare Magistrates’ Court for the robbery that occurred on May 2, 2025.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the young victim had been cycling to a nearby shopping centre at around 5PM when Chihono approached him with an Okapi knife.
“Chihono threatened to stab the complainant with an Okapi knife before robbing him of his bicycle,” read an NPAZ statement.
Relatives Chase Down Robber
The stolen bicycle, valued at US$80, was swiftly recovered thanks to the efforts of the boy’s relatives.
They launched an immediate manhunt, apprehended Chihono, and handed him over to police.
Sentenced to Five Years, Will Serve Three
Chihono was slapped with a five-year prison sentence, of which two years were suspended. He will serve an effective three years behind bars.
The NPA commended the community’s swift action:
“The NPA applauds the swift action of the victim’s relatives and reiterates the importance of respecting property rights.”
