Mutare-Masvingo Accident: 4 Dead as Toyota GD6 Overturns, 3 Injured
Tragedy struck on the Mutare-Masvingo Road on Thursday, 28 August 2025, when a Toyota Fortuner GD6 carrying seven people veered off the road, hit a concrete signpost, and overturned multiple times before landing on its roof. Four people died on the spot, while three others were rushed to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital with injuries. The victims’ bodies were taken to the same hospital’s mortuary.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the accident on their social media platforms, noting that the vehicle lost control at the 46km peg. The authorities have called for drivers to exercise caution, though details on the cause of the crash remain under investigation.
“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 46 kilometre peg along Mutare – Masvingo Road on 28/08/25. A Toyota Fortuner GD6 vehicle with seven occupants on board veered off the road, hit a concrete road signpost, and overturned several times before landing on its roof. Resultantly, four people died on the spot while three others were injured. The bodies of the victims were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial hospital mortuary while the injured are admitted at the same institution,” ZRP said on X.
Online, Zimbabweans shared a mixture of condolences and theories about what may have caused the crash. Some pointed to driver error, others to vehicle issues, while a few criticised road authorities for failing to prevent repeated tragedies.
