Harare Lights Scandal: Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu Face New Corruption Investigation

It appears the troubles for Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu keep on piling, as they find themselves entangled in yet another high-profile corruption investigation.

The two men are currently in remand prison, facing allegations of defrauding the government of US$7 million under the Presidential Goat Scheme. They were accused of receiving payment but failing to supply the promised goats.

Mike Chimombe and Moses Mpofu Being Investigated Over Harare Street Lights Scandal

Now, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) is investigating Chimombe and Mpofu in connection with the Harare Lights Street scandal. A company allegedly owned by the duo, Juluka, is suspected of fraudulently securing a tender.

Apart from Chimombe and Mpofu, ZACC is also probing four other people, bringing the total to 6 people under investigation and in jail over the matter.

In addition to Chimombe and Mpofu, ZACC has already arrested four officials from the Harare City Council who are accused of improperly awarding the US$9.2 million street lights tender to Moses Mpofu.

Harare City Council Officials Arrested Over Hatare Street Lights Scandal

The officials who were arrested are Never Murerwa (62), manager of the supply chain in the Procurement Management Unit; Jabulani Mukomazi (44), principal buyer; Denford Zhungu (69), principal accountant; and Tawanda Mutenhabundo (29), engineering technician.

ZACC is also reportedly keen to interview two more individuals in connection with the Harare Lights Street scandal.

Legal Proceedings Bring Corruption Scandal to Light

The scandal was brought to light after a company called Donax Enterprises took the matter to court after it discovered that some companies awarded the tender had used falsified documents to support their bids.

The High Court heard the case on Wednesday, and the judge suspended the tender pending the outcome of ZACC’s investigation. This ruling means no work can proceed while the matter is under investigation.
