Olorato Mongela Murder Suspects Reportedly Fleeing to Zimbabwe

The murder of 30-year-old Wits student Olorato Mongela has taken a dramatic turn, after the main suspect, Philangennkosi Makhanya, was shot and killed on Friday, 30 May 2025, in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal.

Before his death, Makhanya reportedly told someone close to him that his two accomplices were fleeing to Zimbabwe to evade arrest.

Police have since arrested Makhanya’s mother, accusing her of helping him evade capture. His father, who was arrested earlier, is believed to be the owner of the Volkswagen Polo linked to Mongela’s murder.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine how deeply both parents were involved. As of now, no formal charges have been filed against them.

Shortly before his death, Makhanya allegedly told a witness that one of the other suspects said they were heading to Zimbabwe.

General Mkhwanazi said police were working closely with their counterparts in Gauteng to track down the remaining suspects, believed to be two men who were part of the fatal incident.

“This guy here tells us that when he interviewed the deceased, the deceased told him the other suspect said he told him that he was going to Zimbabwe. So, we do not know about that, and we’re still trying to locate him. Even the other suspect that might have been involved in this case, we are told by Gauteng’s team that there were two suspects that were part of it, but we know the main suspect was this one that we managed to locate here. So, while the team in Gauteng is tracing for other suspects, and they share information with us, and the one that we know on the media that is one of the accomplices, we are also going to be tracing him,” he said.
