Outrage After ZRP Reports Honda Fit Accident With 11 Passengers on Nyanga–Rwenya Road
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) stirred controversy online after revealing that a Honda Fit carrying 11 passengers was involved in a fatal accident along the Nyanga–Rwenya Road.
How the Accident Happened
Honda Fits are small sedans designed to carry about five people, yet they are widely used as pirate taxis, often overloaded far beyond their capacity.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the accident occurred on Thursday, 21 August 2025, around 5 PM at the 48-kilometre peg along Nyanga–Rwenya Road. He explained that the car veered off the road, overturned, and landed on its roof. Sadly, two people lost their lives while 10 others were injured. The bodies were taken to Nyanga District Hospital mortuary, and the injured were referred to Regina Coeli Mission Hospital for treatment.

After the post, many Zimbabweans online questioned whether the police got the numbers right. Some pointed out that the statement mentioned 11 passengers, but the tally of 2 deaths plus 10 injuries suggested 12 people. Others debated how 11 passengers could even fit into such a small car, while some shifted the blame onto police roadblocks that failed to stop the vehicle before tragedy struck.
Here are some of the comments:
@jackmunyati1:
@PoliceZimbabwe there’s everything wrong with you continually reporting these accidents on social media. A Honda fit has a carrying capacity of 5 including the driver. How then can you report a Honda fit carrying 11 people with the current heavy police presence on the roads?
@DicksonKadungu6:
10 injured. 2 died. 11 in a Honda Fit. Umwe abvepi wechi12.
@Praisel48988029:
Zvamunonyora izvi motanga maverenga here 2 killed and 10 injured, and also with 11 passengers on board, maths dzacho dzirikuramba.
@Rocford0:
I think there should be penalties for cops on the road block that fail to intercept a car carrying over capacity. How did a Honda fit with 11 passengers pass through a road block?
@iamcure0x:
4 front. 4 back. 3 kuboot.
