Outrage in South Africa as Zimbabwean Appointed to Top Polokwane Job

The Polokwane Municipality has come under fire after appointing Zimbabwean national Nyasha Kennedy Chihota as its new Director of Water and Sanitation. Despite the move being approved by the council and backed by the mayor, many South Africans are furious that a foreign national landed a senior position.

Mayor John Mpe stood by the decision, saying Chihota was chosen based on merit, not nationality or politics. He insisted the municipality’s priority was to hire skilled professionals who can deliver, regardless of where they come from.

But his defence did little to calm the backlash.

After InsideOutNews shared the news on social media, many South Africans flooded the comments section with anger and disbelief. Here are some of the reactions:

@Ndi_Muvenda_:

Wasn’t there any South African with skills who could have become a director? This is a government job, not private.

@MzansiWarrior:

What I really want to say will probably get my account flagged by the intelligence operatives who monitor Twitter, but to put it mildly and respectfully, as South Africans, we need to start being more robust when we engage with these politicians. We can’t let people run our country like their own spaza shops.

@GertHendrikse:

John Mpe says it’s about merit? Then publish Kennedy Chihota’s full CV. We’ll decide if no South African was good enough, or if this is just another slap in the face to unemployed locals. Jobs in South Africa must go to South Africans. Full stop.

@Mavhuto10:

Chihota has a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (UZ), Master’s Degree in Engineering (University of Stellenbosch), Master’s in Business Administration (UZ), Master’s Degree in Property Development, Master’s Degree in Water Resources Engineering and Management (UZ).

@AmonFarooq:

The dominance of crime, criminality & the appetite to kill, some criminals & haters will plan a hit on him soon & very soon. The evil minds will make attempts. To self-preserve and live, no one would be comfortable retaining the position.
