South African media personality Pearl Thusi has revealed the chilling details of a past encounter with the convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester. The harrowing account features in the new Netflix documentary series, Beauty and the Bester, which premiered on the 12th of September.
Thusi described the incident, which occurred years prior when Bester, infamously dubbed the “Facebook rapist,” lured her under false pretences.
Thusi explained that Bester initially contacted her through the social media platform regarding what she believed was a legitimate television hosting opportunity. The meeting, however, quickly spiralled into a life-threatening situation. She detailed how the ordinary drive turned sinister when Bester instructed her to turn into a deserted dead-end street.

Pearl Thusi Recounts Encounter With Thabo Bester
In her own words, Thusi described the moment she realised the grave danger she was in. She said,
“I got there and he got into the car. After about 25 minutes of driving he said turn left here and I realised it’s a dead end. As I turn to look at him, he’s already drawn the knife. My mind is racing, adrenaline is pumping. I never felt so stupid.”
She continued, recounting her attempts to reason with him,
“I asked him why he’s doing this and he starts a monologue about his life and how hard it has been.”
This confession left her terrified and searching for a way to survive the ordeal.
Fearing for her life, Thusi revealed her desperate strategy to escape. She managed to contact her pastor, a man she identified only as Gift, who then intervened remotely.
“My desperate bid to survive led to me contacting my pastor, who negotiated with Thabo,” Thusi stated.
The pastor reportedly engaged Bester in a discussion about the Bible, which created a crucial distraction and allowed time for the authorities to be alerted. This swift action ultimately led to her narrow escape before any physical harm could be inflicted.
The documentary series also explores Bester’s later crimes and his sensational prison escape with his partner, Dr Nandipha Magudumana.
