Police arrest 3 more people for murder of Stellenbosch University student

Western Cape police have confirmed the arrest of three additional suspects in connection with the tragic murder of Stellenbosch University student. The first-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) student was robbed and fatally stabbed in the early hours of Wednesday, October 16, 2024, in what has shocked the university community and surrounding areas.

The 19-year-old student was reportedly riding his bicycle down Borcherd Street at approximately 3 a.m. when he was accosted by a group of individuals. According to initial reports from Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, Western Cape provincial police spokesperson, the assailants robbed the student of his personal belongings before one of the suspects fatally stabbed him in the neck. The student succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack.

Lieutenant Colonel Pojie confirmed that this initial suspect is scheduled to appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 18, 2024, where he will face charges related to the robbery and murder. “Stellenbosch detectives’ intricate investigation, in collaboration with Crime Intelligence, led to the arrest of a 19-year-old male suspect within hours of the crime’s commission,” Pojie stated.

Additional Arrests

Following the initial arrest, the investigation continued to gain momentum. On Thursday, October 17, 2024, police made a significant breakthrough by apprehending three more suspects connected to the crime. These individuals were arrested in the Cloetesville area of Stellenbosch, a few kilometers from the scene of the attack.

Lieutenant Colonel Pojie confirmed that the three suspects include two males, aged 29 and 28, and a 31-year-old female. “Stellenbosch Crime Prevention arrested three more suspects, two males aged 29 and 28, as well as a 31-year-old female in Cloetesville,” he said. The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in court once formal charges are laid against them.
