Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni has revealed that 6 cash-in-transit robbers killed by police had been driving a stolen vehicle.
Earlier on Saturday, police swiftly responded to a report of a cash-in-transit heist in the Germiston CBD before they pounced on the suspects.
Six were fatally shot while another sustained serious injuries before being rushed to hospital for medical treatment.
The dramatic ordeal is believed to have taken place at around 10am on Saturday morning.
A shootout with law enforcement officers broke out when the suspected cash-in-transit robbers failed to flee the scene.
Spread out between Victoria, Mayor, and President streets, the bodies of some of the deceased and pools of blood could be seen for hours.
Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni arrived a short while after the shootout and provided a briefing of what exactly took place.
“The car you see there we have since confirmed that it was positively stolen. The cartridges are from the exchange of fire,” said Mthombeni.
Investigations into the matter are continuing.
