The police have denied reports that are circulating stating that arrests have been made in the recent gruesome Norton killings.
The town of Norton has been transformed into fear and anger following a series of brutal murders, with tensions exploding onto the streets after false reports of new arrests spread like wildfire. Groups of residents, some armed with stones, gathered demanding immediate mob justice.
The unrest was triggered by online rumours claiming that additional suspects had been detained in connection with the murders and were preparing to lead police to the crime scenes. This misinformation tapped directly into the raw nerves of a population living in terror after two men were found killed in the Katanga area within a devastating 48-hour period.

In response to the escalating situation, national police authorities issued a swift and firm denial. Police national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, addressed the circulating claims directly, stating:
“The police are concerned about the false information circulating on social media regarding the arrest of suspects in the Norton murder case. We categorically deny any such arrests.”
This intervention aimed to calm a volatile situation and prevent further outbreaks of violence.
The victims have been named as Patrice Tinashe Chipaumire, aged 40, and Shadreck Jack Gideon, aged 29. The brutality of the crimes has fuelled speculation and dread, with one of the bodies found mutilated. An employee from a business near the crime scene described the palpable tension, revealing the profound impact on daily life.
“People are furious about the brutal murders that occurred within 48 hours. They heard from sources that the suspects had been arrested and came in large numbers.”

While the crowd was eventually dispersed, the grief for the families remains. Gideon’s family spokesperson, Ruth Raphael, confirmed the heartbreaking details, saying:
“Shadreck was self-employed and leaves behind a seven-year-old daughter. If all goes according to plan, we expect to hold the funeral this Saturday.”
One man, Pardon Jena, has already appeared in court in connection with the murder of Mr. Chipaumire and has been remanded in custody.
