Police Launch Manhunt For Man Who Stabbed Young Illegal Miner To Death

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have launched a manhunt after a man stabbed a young illegal miner to death and ran away from the scene.

Authorities are searching for a suspect identified only as Bhaks Nyathi following the brutal stabbing death of a teenage artisanal miner during a late-night altercation at Gonka Mine in Umguza.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed investigators are treating the incident as murder. The victim, 19-year-old Freddy Masina from Mantoni Village in Nkayi, was attacked while sleeping in a mining trench with three other men in the early hours of August 14.

“A witness reported being awakened by distressed sounds from the victim,” Inspector Msebele stated. “The suspect allegedly declared he wouldn’t tolerate disrespect from a younger person before fleeing the scene.”

The witnesses have no idea how the victim had disrespected Nyathi, as the suspect did not explain. They tried to help the dying man, but their efforts were too late as the injuries proved to be fatal.

Examination revealed Masina suffered multiple stab wounds to critical areas, including his chin, neck, and behind the ear. Police reports describe severe bleeding from both the injuries and the facial wounds.

Nyathi, described as a former mine employee who returned illegally for artisanal mining operations, remains at large. Authorities emphasise he was not properly registered to work at the site.

“We strongly discourage resolving disputes through violence,” Inspector Msebele cautioned. “Such actions lead to tragic, irreversible consequences.”

Police Appeal To The Public for Information

Police have issued a public appeal for information leading to Nyathi’s arrest, urging community members to contact their nearest police station with any relevant details.

Masina’s body has been transferred to United Bulawayo Hospitals for autopsy as investigations continue.
