Police Speak Out on Claims Sulumani Chimbetu Was Arrested for Proposing to Grace Mugabe

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has poured cold water on wild claims that Dendera musician Sulumani Chimbetu was arrested for making romantic advances toward former First Lady Grace Mugabe.

On Tuesday, 5 August 2025, social media exploded with rumours that Sulumani had allegedly tried to woo Grace Mugabe during a chance encounter in Mazowe, and that she wasn’t impressed. The rumours went as far as suggesting he was reported for harassment and arrested at a Harare police station.

But police say it’s all nonsense.

National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi dismissed the reports, stating that no such incident had been reported. He also warned people against using social media to peddle falsehoods.

“We never received such a report…we are warning people who are abusing social media…,” national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi told The Daily News on Tuesday afternoon.

Sulumani himself also denied the allegations, telling ZimLive that he had never made any romantic advances toward the widow of the late Robert Mugabe. He described the claims as a deliberate attempt to drag his name through the mud.

“I’m just seeing the messages and posts going viral about the allegations. It’s not true. Nothing of that sort has ever happened, and these are just people trying to create content in a bad way,” he said.

Grace Mugabe, who recently turned 60 and celebrated her birthday with a lavish bash, has not responded to the saga.

Sulu now joins a growing list of Zimbabwean public figures caught up in social media storms driven by false claims and AI-generated gossip. Authorities have raised concerns over the increasing spread of misinformation online — some of it malicious, some of it laughable, but all of it with the potential to damage reputations.

Police and regulators are urging citizens to verify facts before sharing content, warning that fake news doesn’t just go viral; it can ruin lives.
