President Ramaphosa honours late Justice Yvonne Mokgoro with special official category one funeral

President Cyril Ramaphosa has honoured late former Constitutional Court judge Justice Yvonne Mokgoro with a special category one official funeral.

The national flag will be flown at half-mast at all flag stations around the country from Sunday until the evening of her funeral on Thursday.

Mokgoro passed away last week at the age of 73 in hospital.

Her family said she suffered health setbacks after suffering multiple injuries in a serious car crash near Kimberley in 2023.

Justice Mokgoro is regarded as a pioneer in the legal fraternity, being the first black woman judge to sit on the first Constitutional Court bench from 1994 to 2009.

“The distinguishing features of a special official funeral in this category include ceremonial elements by the South African Defence Force in recognition of a distinguished career and contribution to the nation,” said Presidency Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya.
