SAMA: Amid many good doctors are a few with bad attitudes

The South African Medical Association (SAMA) says while there are many doctors who treat their patients well, there is still a significant number who don’t have the attitude that patients require doctors to have.

Former broadcaster Tom London who was recently admitted to Helen Joseph Hospital, in Johannesburg, has detailed his experience in a video that has been widely circulated.

London complained about poor treatment by some doctors, treating patients like cockroaches.

He also filmed parts of the hospital showing peeling ceiling boards, damaged floors and taps that don’t work.

The SA Medical Association’s Mvuyisi Mzukwa said in some cases, doctors’ bad attitudes are a result of the pressures and conditions under which they have to work.

“Also, this is made worse by the conditions that healthcare workers are working under, because like we reported in the past, you don’t expect a doctor who has been complaining about a working environment to be in their right, good state of mind to deliver that because that person is experiencing burnout, frustrations as well.”
