The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has issued a firm guarantee that millions of social grant recipients will see no interruption to their vital payments, despite the imminent conclusion of its long-standing contract with Postbank. The reassurances come directly from the highest levels of government, aimed at preventing any unnecessary panic among the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe addressed Parliament directly, confirming that the transition away from Postbank, effective September 30, will be seamless. This move impacts over three million beneficiaries who currently rely on the state-owned bank for their monthly grants. Officials have emphasised that Postbank remains a fully licensed financial institution and that all existing banking channels will continue to operate without interruption.

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Social Development, Bridget Masango, provided crucial clarity on the process. She explained that the fundamental shift is towards paying grants directly into the personal bank accounts of recipients, effectively removing the need for a single, centralised service provider.
She elaborated, “There is no new service provider. Every effort has been made to ensure that funds are paid into bank accounts. We are getting closer to SASSA fulfilling its mandate, which is to pay and manage grants.”
Masango added that this direct-banking model should eliminate the technical glitches that have plagued the system in recent years, offering a more reliable service.
“There is comfort in knowing that the glitches previously experienced by beneficiaries are unlikely to occur after 30 September,” she stated.
