Scottland FC Buys Mnangagwa-Signed Soccer Ball for US$40K
Scottland FC made headlines after offering a whopping US$40,000 for a soccer ball signed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The dramatic bid happened during the ED-UNZA golf prize-giving dinner held at State House on Friday night, 25 July 2025.
The fundraising event was aimed at supporting the ED-UNZA Scholarship Fund, which helps underprivileged students access university education both in Zimbabwe and at the University of Zambia. The programme, which targets 100 beneficiaries by 2026, selects students from all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe.
Earlier that day, President Mnangagwa had autographed the ball during the Putt-Out Challenge at Royal Golf Harare. Scottland FC later won the auction and kept the ball after placing the highest bid.
After the news was shared online by The Herald, reactions quickly poured in. While some applauded the gesture as a noble fundraising initiative, others weren’t so convinced—questioning whether the funds would truly reach deserving students or joking about the priorities of the event.
