A Harare security guard stands accused of orchestrating a terrifying armed robbery against his own Chinese employers, making off with a fortune in cash and valuables. The alleged inside job saw the couple relieved of US$37,000  in a violent ambush right on their own property.

The accused, Brian Kambarami (43), who was directly employed by the couple for protection, appeared in Harare Magistrates’ Court alongside an alleged accomplice, Tinashe Muguti (38). Both men were remanded in custody until September 15, with Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa instructing them to seek bail through the High Court. The court was told how the carefully planned attack unfolded on the night of the 23rd of August. The victims, Shaolin Chen and his wife, had just returned to their Harare residence in their white Toyota Prado. As they entered their yard, their sense of security was shattered. A group of men, armed with pistols and their faces hidden by balaclavas, surged towards their vehicle.

It was a moment of pure terror. The assailants allegedly wrenched open the passenger door and seized a handbag from Mrs Chen. The bag was no ordinary purse; it contained a staggering US$32,000 in cash. The thieves also made off with a Samsung Galaxy mobile phone, the vehicle’s keys, and casino chips valued at a further US$5,000 before vanishing into the night.

The couple immediately reported the traumatic incident to the ZRP Mbare.

Footage Reveals Security Guard’s  Betrayal

The breakthrough in the case came not from a witness, but from a digital one, a closed-circuit television footage. The recordings from the property reportedly revealed a familiar face among the masked robbers, their own security guard, Brian Kambarami.

Upon his arrest, Kambarami is said to have confessed to his role in the robbery. He admitted to carrying out the heist alongside Muguti and other accomplices who remain at large. In a further twist, he led investigators to his homestead, where a portion of the stolen money was recovered.
