Seke Road Accident Survivor Speaks After 15 Killed

A survivor of the deadly Seke Road crash near the Hunyani Bridge has spoken out about the terrifying moment that changed her life. Vanessa Nyandoro, 24, was one of just three people who made it out alive from the kombi that was crushed by a haulage truck. She suffered back injuries but somehow lived through an accident that claimed 15 lives on the spot, including the kombi driver.

Still in disbelief over her survival, Vanessa said she has no idea how she made it out alive, and is simply grateful to be breathing.

“I do not know how I escaped. I thank God for this life,” Vanessa told H-Metro.

Vanessa was among 15 passengers in the kombi when tragedy struck. Along with her, two other passengers in the kombi survived the crash. The driver of the haulage truck, 56-year-old Desire Madariko, also survived but was rushed to Chitungwiza Hospital with neck injuries. A passenger who had been in the truck made it out, too.

The accident caused chaos on Seke Road, resulting in one of the worst traffic jams the area has seen since the road was upgraded into a dual carriageway.

An eyewitness shared chilling details of how the crash happened. According to them, the kombi was headed south toward Chitungwiza when disaster struck. They believe the truck driver lost control, veered off course, and ploughed into pedestrians walking on the road island before crossing into oncoming traffic.

“The kombi driver stays in Zengeza. He was driving along Seke Road due south towards Chitungwiza. I want to believe that the haulage truck driver lost control of his motor vehicle, veered to the right side, and hit the people who were walking on the road island towards Chitungwiza. He then encroached onto the oncoming traffic lane and hit the kombi on the front driver’s door. The haulage truck dragged the kombi off the road and landed on top of it,” the witness said.
