Social Media Erupts After Two Women Drown in Nyaure River While Performing Mermaid ‘Manjuzu’ Rituals
Two women tragically drowned in the Nyaure River in Bindura during a controversial ritual believed to be linked to “manjuzu” — or mermaid spirit worship — which has gained popularity among some young women seeking fame or wealth.
The incident unfolded during a spiritual session led by a self-proclaimed prophet who claimed the ritual was meant to invoke mermaid spirits believed to reside in sacred waters.

Prophet Speaks Out After His Wife Dies
The prophet leading the session confirmed to ZBC that his wife was among the deceased.
“I went with some women to pray and I wanted to invoke the mermaid spirits. These people had their own issues and during this process one of us was taken by the spirits,” he explained.
“We then went into the water to try and rescue her and one of them died. In the process, my wife also died during the rescue.”
Traditional Leaders Caution Against Tampering with Sacred Waters
Headman Masembura condemned the act and warned people against conducting unsanctioned rituals at sacred water bodies.
“These are sacred waters, and there are underground spiritual creatures there. So, every time you go there you must follow proper rituals and you must ask the leaders of this place,” he said.
He further revealed that the self-styled prophet claimed to have brought rice, sweets, biscuits, and wine as offerings to appease the mermaid spirits of a deceased colleague.
“We asked these people what exactly they were doing and this self-styled prophet said he brought rice, sweets and biscuits and wine to appease the mermaid spirits of their deceased colleague. In this river, we have never heard of mermaids, but spiritual things are hard to understand because there are spiritual beings under water — so it could be like that,” he added.
Social Media Reacts to Bindura Drownings
The tragic incident has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many expressing disbelief and concern over the growing trend of spiritual rituals involving manjuzu. Others have questioned the safety and legitimacy of such practices and the role of untrained spiritual leaders in conducting them.
