South Africa Moves to Digital Visas with New Electronic Travel Authorisation
South Africa is preparing to digitize its visa process with the launch of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system later this month.
Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber will officially introduce the platform on Thursday, September 18, 2025, during the Tourism Business Council of South Africa (TBCSA) annual conference.
According to the Department of Home Affairs, the ETA will mark a significant step towards reducing paperwork and modernizing travel systems.

A Shift from Paper to Digital
Currently, visa applications are processed through embassies, consulates, or VFS Global service centers — requiring forms, supporting documents, and fees, often leading to long delays. The ETA is expected to simplify this by allowing travelers to apply online, obtain a digital code, and have their documents verified through biometrics upon arrival.
“The ETA is designed to automate and digitalise South Africa’s visa processes over time. This will make travel easier while boosting security at our borders,” the Department of Home Affairs said.
Powered by Artificial Intelligence
The new platform will use machine learning technology to detect fraudulent applications and improve efficiency. Authorities believe this will enhance border security while speeding up processing times for legitimate travelers.
A government statement confirmed:
“Through cutting-edge machine learning technology, the ETA is designed to, over time, digitalise and automate South Africa’s visa processes to eliminate inefficiency and fraud.”
Gradual Rollout and Expansion
Initially, the ETA will apply to tourist travelers arriving at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airport. Over time, the system will expand to more visa categories and ports of entry.
Minister Schreiber recently explained:
“Over time, the ETA will be expanded to more visa categories and rolled out at more ports of entry. This scale-up will continue until no person can enter South Africa without obtaining a digital visa through the ETA.”
Awaiting the List of Eligible Travelers
One key detail yet to be revealed is the list of nationalities that will be required to apply for the ETA.
The government has said this information will only be announced during Thursday’s official launch.
