Sulumani Chimbetu Breaks Silence Over Grace Mugabe Romance Claims

Sulu Denies Making Romantic Advances Towards Grace Mugabe

Dendera star Sulumani Chimbetu has firmly denied explosive social media rumours claiming he made romantic advances towards former First Lady Grace Mugabe.

The claims, which surfaced online over the weekend, alleged that the musician approached Grace Mugabe with a proposal after a supposed chance encounter in Mazowe. Some posts even suggested that the widow of the late President Robert Mugabe filed a report of harassment at a police station in Harare.

But Chimbetu has rubbished the allegations.

“I’m just seeing the messages and posts going viral about the allegations. It’s not true. Nothing of that sort has ever happened, and these are just people trying to create content in a bad way,”
— Sulumani Chimbetu speaking to ZimLive on Tuesday, 5 August 2025.

‘There Was No Incident’

Chimbetu insisted he has never even had any form of interaction with Grace Mugabe recently.

“I have never approached her. I don’t even know where this is coming from,”
— he said.

Grace Mugabe, who turned 60 over the weekend and reportedly held a private celebration, has not responded to the online claims. There has also been no confirmation from Zimbabwe Republic Police regarding any complaint or arrest.

ZimLive, which published the first official denial from Chimbetu, also confirmed that no official records of such a complaint exist at any Harare police station.

Viral Claims Raise Concern Over Fake News

The rumour quickly spread across X and WhatsApp, sparking widespread debate and mockery online. But many were quick to question the story’s authenticity, pointing out the lack of evidence or credible sources.

Authorities have warned the public about the growing danger of false reports circulated through social media and AI-generated content.

“The abuse of digital platforms to spread fake news, especially through artificial intelligence and unverified content, poses serious legal and ethical concerns,”
— said a digital safety expert who spoke to ZimLive.

Chimbetu is the latest in a growing list of public figures in Zimbabwe to be targeted by viral misinformation.

“People need to be more responsible with what they share. These lies can destroy lives,”
— said another commentator on X.

The musician, son of the late Simon Chimbetu, has often kept a low profile in recent years, focusing on music and family.

No Police Confirmation, No Comment From Grace

Despite the allegations swirling, police authorities have remained silent. Attempts by media outlets to obtain an official comment have been unsuccessful.

Grace Mugabe has also not issued a statement on the matter.
