Seke Road Shut Down As Mapostori For ED Hold Cleansing Ceremony
Seke Road came to a standstill on Sunday, as thousands of apostolic worshippers poured onto the busy highway. The gathering was a national cleansing ceremony organised by Mapostori For ED in response to a spate of fatal crashes that have turned the route into one of the most feared in Zimbabwe.
Prophet Madzibaba Mozi led the mass prayer, joined by senior leaders from other Johane Masowe Apostolic sect groups. Worshippers dressed in flowing white robes sang, clapped, and prayed, hoping to cleanse the stretch of road that has been the scene of repeated carnage.
A Cry For Protection
Addressing the crowd, Prophet Mozi spoke of the urgent need for divine intervention:
“This road has claimed too many lives. We are asking for God’s hand to protect drivers, passengers, and all who use it.”
The gathering was staged between Chinhamo Service Station and Zororo Memorial Park. According to a City of Harare public notice, one city-bound lane was closed from 11 AM to 2 PM to accommodate the prayer.
Police and municipal officers redirected vehicles, converting the Chitungwiza-bound lane into two-way traffic for the duration of the service.
Deadly Crashes In July
The ceremony followed devastating accidents that struck Seke Road in the last few weeks.
The first and most devastating accident occurred on July 22, 2025. A South Africa-registered haulage truck collided with a commuter omnibus, or kombi, near the Manyame River Bridge. The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the tragic death toll of seventeen people. Among the victims were two children, identified as three-year-old Shantel Jere and seven-year-old Joshua Gutsa.
Just one week later, on July 29, 2025, another serious accident occurred on Seke Road. An overloaded Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, heading towards Harare from Chitungwiza, burst a tyre and veered off the road near Chinhamo Bridge. Sixteen people were seriously injured and rushed to Chitungwiza Central Hospital.
“We Want Safety On Our Roads”
The consecutive tragedies and other smaller crashes prompted the Mapostori For ED group to organise Sunday’s event.
Worshippers at Sunday’s event said they were praying not just for Seke Road, but for road safety across the country.
The ceremony proceeded peacefully, with traffic enforcement agents on site to manage the flow of vehicles as one city-bound lane was closed for the three-hour event. Motorists were directed to use the opposite lane under a controlled two-way system.
The nation now watches and hopes that the combination of faith and action will lead to safer journeys for all.
